Background and Discussion:
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT), founded in 1891, is a lineage-based heritage organization dedicated to preserving the memory and history of those who lived in or served the Republic of Texas prior to 1846. Their mission includes safeguarding historic sites, promoting research, and placing markers and medallions to recognize locations significant to early Texas history.
New Kentucky Park in Hockley sits on the site of the former town of New Kentucky, a settlement established before 1831 that thrived until Houston's growth diverted its trade. The town was abandoned around 1840, and in 1936 a Texas Centennial monument was installed to mark the historic location.
