Background and Discussion:

Black Maternal Health Week, recognized annually on April 11-17, is a week-long campaign led by the national Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness and activism to address Black maternal health disparities. Harris County’s pregnancy-related death rate has been consistently higher than the U.S. rate since 2016, with an increase from 31.65 per 100,000 live births in 2019 to 54.85 per 100,000 live births in 2020, and Black, non-Hispanic women have the highest pregnancy-related death rate among all racial and ethnic groups (83.4 per 100,000 live births). Harris County Public Health is taking an active role in advocating for maternal health through its various programs (such as WIC, the Maternal and Child Health Program, and ACCESS), and this resolution is in support of advancing awareness and activism to end Black maternal health disparities.
