Background and Discussion:

Maternal Mental Health participants include individuals across the fertility spectrum: individuals who are trying to become pregnant, navigating antepartum care, grieving loss after pregnancy, expressing interest in mental health support connected to birthing and postpartum care. The project identifies and reduces symptomology related to Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders through mental health screenings and care plan coordination. Greater Houston Counseling Services will provide clinical treatment options which include but are not limited to psychiatric assessment, medication evaluation/management, and outpatient individual and family therapy based on clinician recommendations. This contract allows access to psychiatric evaluation, individual/family sessions and virtual care options for the birthing person as well as the entire family unit to bring about holistic healing to those involved.  The aim of the Maternal Mental Health initiative is to improve the accessibility of comprehensive maternal mental healthcare for birthing persons and modern families within Harris County. This project aims to create a safety net for birthing persons and modern families and support maternal mental health to reduce risks associated with morbidity rates and complications connected to birth. The objective of this project is to ensure a healthy emotional environment for both parents and household members. The Maternal Mental Health project aims to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality rates associated with childbirth by focusing on maternal mental health and the holistic healing for the family unit throughout the perinatal and postpartum period through evidence-based interventions, individual and group therapy processes.

Expected Impact:

Increased access to mental health services for mothers and immediate family members during and after pregnancy, up to 1 year after birth. Increased mental health provider community coordination and access to care through coordinated access to higher levels of outpatient care. Provides culturally competent care through a mental health practice which employs staff of various minority ethnic backgrounds skilled in dual languages for both in-person and virtual care services. Facility has the capacity to services up to 7 languages.   Will assist CHWD in diagnosis and care management of individuals in the community suffering from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Enables CHWD to support a larger segment of mental health participants through direct mental health provider services.
