Background and Discussion:

The state grant funds awarded are $3,502,000 for the year beginning October 1, 2024 and ending September 30, 2025. Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice via the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division, the purpose of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) program is to provide services and assistance directly to victims of crime, speed their recovery, and aid them through the criminal justice process.  Due to anticipated funding levels the grantor has placed a cap on the amount that can be requested this year as well as brought back the match requirement.

Expected Impact:

If awarded this would be the 7 th year of funding for this combined project, which would provide continuation funds for the provision of victim services through the District Attorney's Office. Support staff requested include case workers, victim assistance coordinators, attorneys, and related positions. This grant will fund the 38 positions in the Victim Assistance Project of the Harris County DA’s Office.

Alternative Options:

Without grant funding, these 38 positions would need to be vacated and the program would no longer run.
