Background and Discussion:
The state grant funds awarded are $400,000 with required match $171,429 for a total of $571,429 for the year beginning October 1, 2024 and ending September 30, 2025. Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice via the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division, the purpose of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) program is to promote a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to improving the criminal justice system's response to violent crimes against women, including domestic violence, commercial sex trafficking, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.
Expected Impact:
This grant will fund the Special Victims Prosecution and Protective Order Project of the Harris County District Attorney's Office. If awarded, this would be the 11 th year of funding for this grants project, which supports the Family Criminal Law Division of the District Attorney's Office. Budget is requested for part of the salaries and benefits of 5 full-time prosecutors to file for restraining orders, protective orders, and to investigate cases for possible prosecution-as needed-on behalf of victims of stalking, domestic violence and related offenses who are seeking assistance and safety.
