Background and Discussion:
The Harris County Sheriff's Office CORE program was created in collaboration with The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD, which assists deputies in patrol when responding to a call for service with a mental health nexus. CORE equips patrol deputies with an iPad which they can utilize to access a clinician from The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD. CORE provides on - scene assessments, guidance, and multiple resources through tele-conferencing technology. This program was fully established in 2019 and was extended to the Constables in April 2021 and already operating throughout the county and assisting deputies with calls for service with a mental health nexus and providing resources to our communities.

Expected Impact:
This program will improve our response to calls for service involving a mental health nexus. This program will assist in providing on-site mental health assessments from The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD staff and reduce the number of transports to hospital emergency rooms by providing on the scene resources along with diverting consumers who have committed low-level offense (and have a mental health component) from the criminal justice system to the mental health car...
