Background and Discussion: Selective clearing involves the "selective" removal of trees and shrubs on natural, forested channels to create and maintain storm water conveyance without eliminating the benefit of shade producing tree canopies.  The larger channels are programmatically scheduled to ensure sites are worked on a regular basis some are worked more often than others depending on the stability of the channel. Small blockages that develop between clearing cycles will be removed as needed.

Expected Impact: Forested channels provide many communities and environmental benefits enjoyed by Harris County residents.  Renewal of this contract will allow the program to stay on a regular schedule of maintenance for the designated channels. In addition, this contract supports the District’s overall guidance on the maintenance of natural channels.

Alternative Options: An alternative option would be to eliminate the contract and program and have the stormwater conveyance restoration and blockage removal activities limited to in-house boat operations.
