Background and Discussion:

The current levee does not meet the revised FEMA standards for flood protection and cannot be certified by FEMA as it is. This results in increased cost for flood insurance for the residents that are protected by the levee as their homes will be reclassified for flood risk.  This project will modify the levee with a slurry wall to prevent water intrusion and allow for recertification and acceptance by FEMA.

Expected Impact:

This project will modify the existing levee to help prevent a potential levee breach during a flooding event and will allow for continued classification as a FEMA Zone X rather than being reclassified as a Zone AE for the residents of Inverness Forest subdivision. The work will also address back flow from discharge piping that could also result in flooding for the residents.

Alternative Options:

Taking no action leaves the residents who live behind the levee subject to a levee breach as well as significantly higher flood insurance costs for the residents since the levee cannot be recertified.
