Background and Discussion:
The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) mission is to responsibly operate and maintain a safe, reliable, sustainable, and evolving mobility system that meets the diverse connectivity needs of all Harris County residents. This Wrong-way Detection Systems (WWDS) will be used to monitor, detect, and alert HCTRA's Incident Management Center when a vehicle has been detected driving in the wrong direction along the main lanes and ramps. This renewal was reviewed for possible MWBE participation and it was found that the work is specialized, technical and unique in nature. Wrong-Way Detection System (WWDS) is a unique technology that is location specific in each design and highly customizable via proprietary software. TransCore has developed its own propriety software to integrate these WWDS sites into the Incident Management Center’s main interface for use and access. This technology is under the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) umbrella, however, two other well established ITS contractors cannot support this technology due to them being unfamiliar with the technology, equipment/devices, and software.
Expected Impact:
These WWDS systems will assist in providing a safer drive along the Westpark Tollway by alerting law enforcement of a wrong-way movement in order to give them a chance to intercept a vehicle before an accident occurs.
