Background and Discussion:

The County was chosen in 2016 as one of eleven jurisdictions across the United States to receive $2 million to implement strategies for justice system improvement. In 2019, we applied for a renewal grant and received $2.1 million to continue the SJC work and expand our strategy. The renewal grant period expired on September 30, 2022.   The MacArthur Foundation approved a request for a no-cost extension on December 20, 2022, to use unexpended grant funds to cover several SJC strategies, including the Racial and Ethnic Equity Committee work, the Community Assistance Resource Program, court case backlog, and jail population reduction.

Expected Impact:

The grant funds will enable us to build capacity to support the work of the Racial and Ethnic Equity (REE) Committee and continue mental health services interventions and nonappearance mitigation to individuals being released from the jail.

Alternative Options:

Not approve the SJC grant extension, in which case the grant will expire, and the remaining funds will go unused.
