Background and Discussion:

The City of Houston and Harris County submits a single, joint application to the United States Department of Justice for JAG funding annually. This funding is utilized by the Sheriff’s Office and the eight Constables Precincts to support necessary law enforcement related projects that cannot be funded through the general fund budget. The City of Houston and Harris County have received approval for a one-year grant extension from the grantor in order to expend remaining funds.

Expected Impact:

Grant funds will be used by the Sheriff’s Office to purchase necessary software and equipment and to fund professional development training and overtime costs for specialized units.  The Constables will receive 25% of the grant amount for IT equipment, ballistic shields and helmets, Taser accessories, and portable AFIS devices.

Alternative Options:

The department will have to return funds to grantor if the extension is not accepted.
