Background and Discussion:

This is a continuation of the contract with the United States Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to operate approximately 60 stage and flow gages across Harris County. Many of these gages have an extensive period record dating back several years to many decades and from a data comparison and scientific review process it is important that the period of record be continued. Data from USGS gages helps in flood forecasting with the National Weather Service and West Gulf River Forecast Center as well as comparison of flood mitigation projects and impacts of development on a watershed.

Expected Impact:

The biggest impact is to maintain the long-term period of record of the gage locations for historical flood purposes, flood mitigation projects, and flood model review and calibration. The Flood Control District has not added any new USGS gage locations in recent years and have maintained the current coverage of gages and their record longevity. Additionally, at many of the USGS locations, the Flood Control District utilizes the USGS water level measuring device to obtain the water level inside the channel and also adds our rainfall collection sensor. This data is then displayed on the Flood Warning System website.

Alternative Options:

Failure to fund this request will result in the termination of all stage and flow monitoring by USGS in Harris County and the end of the current period of data collection and record.
