Request for approval of a renewal option with Wildernex LLC for nuisance animal control for the Flood Control District for the period of January 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023, at a cost of $43,875 (190354).

Background and Discussion: The District is responsible for the maintenance of over 2,500 miles of channels within Harris County.  Animals such as nutria (Myocastor coypus) and American beaver (Castor canadensis) create blockages to the regular flow of these channels and damage channel banks with their burrows.  Removal of these animals is necessary for the proper function of these channels.  These animals also feed on newly established wetland plantings that are necessary to fulfill the District’s environmental permitting requirements.

Expected Impact: Approval of this contract renewal will allow the District to continue to control these animals in areas where they are impacting the function of flood control facilities and environmental permitting requirements.

Alternative Options: If this contract is not renewed, control of these species will still be necessary using in-house personnel.  This will require the hiring of additional personnel and the purchase of equipment for trapping and removal.
