Background and Discussion:
Harris County’s Black Maternal and Child Health Summit will take place in Houston on October 21 and 22, 2022. For two days, we aim to gather leaders in the field to have open discussion surrounding the state of black maternal health in Harris County, missteps in the health care of black women, and shed light on the urgency to address these missteps head on. The theme of the Summit is “The time is NOW: Understanding Black Maternal and Child Health in Harris County” which will encompass a movie screening of the Hulu documentary “Aftershock” and a Community Day geared towards education and recruitment into the recently approved Black Maternal Health Program. We anticipate approximately 200 in-person attendees from a broad spectrum of professionals and community members. The location and list of speakers is being finalized. University of Houston is a valued partner of Public Health Services and is easily accessible to the population at highest risk for complications.
Expected Impact:
The goal of this Summit is to bring together local agencies and Harris County healthcare providers to discuss strategies and promising practices to decrease the disproportionate morbidity and mortality related to black childbirth. The objective is to have an increased awareness of inefficiencies in current service delivery, introduce Harris County’s Maternal Health program, and recruit eligible participants.
