Background and Discussion:

The District’s wildflower planting program has been funded annually for more than 20 years.  The purpose of the program is to beautify the channels and detention basins that are frequently used by citizens for public space and outdoor education.  In addition, the early season blooming flowers allow the District to bypass mowing those areas to reduce mowing costs, improve soil conditions and to increase the species diversity of the vegetation.

Expected Impact:

Approval of this contract renewal will allow the District to purchase approximately 4,000 pounds of wildflower seed for the upcoming seeding season and allow the District to move forward with the sites chosen for this year’s program.  By seeding these areas in the winter, the surrounding communities will be able to enjoy the blooming wildflowers during late spring and early summer months.

Alternative Options:

Alternative options include choosing not to continue with the wildflower planting program as a whole or pairing back the program.
