Background and Discussion:

On August 10, 2021, Commissioners Court directed Harris County Public Health to establish a new division to implement new and innovative public health approaches that addressed the root causes of violence in order to prevent community violence. The focus of the Community Health and Violence Prevention Services Division aligns with this funding opportunity from the U.S. Department of Justice, which seeks to prevent and reduce violent crime in communities by supporting comprehensive, evidence-based violence intervention and prevention programs.

Expected Impact:

The grant will lead to improved community impact. If awarded, these funds will be used to increase internal capacity for a new pilot community violence intervention program within one of the high-risk zip codes in Harris County. In addition, this grant brings an opportunity to work with a research partner in determining effective implementation strategies and infrastructure setup for a potential future formal evaluation. This also allows us to contribute to the growing knowledge base of research around community violence intervention. Lastly, the funds within this grant will allow for HCPH to provide additional direct support to at-risk populations by ensuring access to services (transportation and dedicated mental health) that these populations would otherwise not have access to.
