title
Request for approval of certain projects, decreeing the projects to be a public necessity and convenience, directing the Harris County Real Property Division to acquire one (1) fee simple tract for the public project known as Riverside Hospital Expansion 2020, for the purpose of future expansion and parking for the Riverside facility, UPIN 21201MF20U01, Precinct 1.
end
Background and Discussion:
The plan for the Riverside complex includes renovation of the three historical buildings, build a new building, a new parking garage, and maintain green space at the historical building site. There is not enough room on the existing historical Riverside Hospital property to accommodate all these elements. Harris County has already acquired five tracts of property on the west side of the existing historical Riverside property for the future new parking garage. Acquiring the additional land will allow a more efficient parking garage which does not tower over the historical building and the residential neighborhood.
Expected Impact:
This will allow the County to build a more efficient parking garage that is three levels in height. This is a residential neighborhood so a building lower in height will be more in line with the characteristics of the neighborhood.
Alternative Options:
Without this this additional parcel the parking garage is likely to be 7 or 8 levels in height. This taller parking garage will be more costly and will dwarf the adjacent three story hospital building now on the National Historic Register.
