Background and Discussion:
This flood risk reduction study project was recommended due to significant flooding concerns in the area in and near Atascocita, which is primarily served by small tributaries to south of the West Fork San Jacinto River, and west of Lake Houston and the downstream reach of the San Jacinto River. The 2018 Bond Project F-15 was allocated with $10 million to be used for planning, right-of-way acquisition, design, and construction of general drainage improvements in this area. This project is ranked in the fourth quartile of bond projects and this feasibility study phase is scheduled to begin in early 2022.
Expected Impact:
This project will study the tributaries which drain the study area, to determine the causes of historical flooding and identify potential improvements to reduce existing flood risk. This feasibility study will be conducted by a consultant and will be funded and managed with existing resources currently available within the District.
Alternative Options:
The alternative would be to cancel the study entirely; however, this study was approved by the voters to be conducted as part of the 2018 Bond.
