Background and Discussion:

Request by the District Courts for approval to submit an application to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission for grant funding in the approximate amount of $3,593,847 for the Indigent Defense Formula Grant Program.

 

Expected Impact:

                     The Texas Indigent Defense Commission (Commission) has advertised the above-referenced grant for indigent defense services. Formula Grants are provided by the Commission to meet its statutory mandates
and to promote Texas counties’ compliance with standards adopted by the Commission
.

 

Alternative Options:

The formula grant reimburses each Texas county for expenses related to indigent defense in criminal and juvenile delinquency matters.  The alternative would be Harris County as sole funding source for these court-ordered expenditures.
