Background and Discussion:

The Texas Department of State Health Services has contracted Harris County Public Health for an Asthma Control Grant funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This request is to renew this contract for another year and for Harris County Public Health Asthma Program to amend the budget for this next year.

Expected Impact:

This grant was awarded to “implement targeted, evidence-based childhood asthma control strategies” in the Harris County Service Area. Public Health Services estimates that this grant will provide continued access and delivery of asthma self-management education to Harris County asthmatic residents, conduct efforts to reduce tobacco smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke and continue to expand access to and delivery of home assessments and modification for asthma trigger reduction in homes and schools.

Alternative Options:

Given that this contract funds the extension of work that is currently being conducted by the program in schools, community centers, clinics, etc., there would be great deficit and gap in services if this contract is not approved. If no action were taken on this item, the alternative options for this program would be limited to only outreach, eliminating home assessments and modifications.
