end
Background and Discussion:
The grant application was approved in Commissioners Court on October 8, 2024. The project was included as a Congressionally Directed Spending request in the FY24 federal budget. Due to unforeseen procurement delays, the Sheriff’s Office requested a no-cost extension to ensure that all the stab-resistant vests are delivered. The Sheriff’s Office submitted a no-cost extension to the U.S. Department of Justice, and the award modification was approved.
The grant award modification was approved by the Office of Justice Programs on August 21, 2026, and the
grant end date has been extended from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
Expected Impact:
The stab-resistant vests will enhance detention officer safety amongst a high population of inmates where the environment has a propensity for aggression and violence against staff. The vests will reduce the serious risk of injury for personnel within the Sheriff’s Office.
