Background and Discussion:
Former Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson represented the Texas 30th Congressional District for thirty years in the United States House of Representatives, from 1993 to 2023, and served as a Texas state lawmaker and a nurse before entering Congress. Johnson was the first Black woman elected to state public office from Dallas and the first African American and woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Johnson died on December 31, 2023 and was praised by President Joe Biden as "an icon and mentor to generations of public servants, through whom her legacy of resilience and purpose will endure."
