Background and Discussion:
Veterinary Public Health (VPH) seeks to renew its contract for microchips, a long-lasting method of animal identification implanted in every dog and cat at the shelter. These microchips are also used for owned animals seeking licensing. The contract further supplies microchip scanners, which enable staff to identify animals and help reunite stray pets with their owners.

Expected Impact:
Microchipped animals have an increased chance of being reunited with their owners, reducing the length of stay at the shelter, resulting in fewer animals being housed in a shelter each year. This contract will allow VPH to quickly purchase these microchips and scanners at a consistent price.

Alternative Options:
Without a contract, VPH will need to identify multiple vendors to purchase microchips and scanners leading to inconsistent brands and pricing.

County Strategic Plan Goal: 4. Improve physical and mental health outcomes across all communities.
