Background and Discussion:
The City of Houston and Harris County submit a single joint application to the United States Department of
Justice for JAG funding annually to support a variety of law enforcement initiatives, including technology improvements, civilian personnel support, and targeted overtime operations. This funding is utilized by the Sheriff’s Office and the eight Constables.

Expected Impact:
Grant funds will be used by the Sheriff’s Office to purchase equipment and technology enhancements and to fund overtime costs. The Constables will receive 25% of the grant amount for equipment and portable AFIS devices. These funds are essential to ensuring reliable technology support across the department and maintaining compliance with the Federal Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS). In addition, overtime funding will enable the Special Victims Division to reduce the backlog of child abuse and sexual assault cases.

The grant period of this award is October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2028.
