Background and Discussion:
This project focuses on the prevention of foodborne illness and outbreaks. Data collected informs strategies to be used to improve environmental health services provided by environmental public health food inspectors. The funding for this project supports strengthening the surveillance, response, and prevention efforts for foodborne illness in Harris County. This grant is in the fifth year of funding.
Expected Impact:
Through covering the financial costs of personnel salaries, fringe, and travel, the Environmental Health Specialist Network team can continue working with food establishments, aiding the prevention of foodborne illness in Harris County and beyond. The ability of Public Health Services to continue providing educational resources to food establishments and developing risk control plans helps food managers identify and manage food safety hazards, which can protect customers and businesses. Through travel to local and national meetings, network disseminates study findings to other local and state health departments. This provides a collaborative effort to inform and prevent the spread of foodborne illness throughout Harris County and other parts of the United States.
