Project Description:

The project involves replacement of Harris County’s (HC) compute (virtualization) and monitoring infrastructure that supports all of our enterprise services and applications. These services include but are not limited to the following mission critical systems: JWEB, PeopleSoft, Computer Aided Dispatch / Record Management System (CAD/RMS), Email, Active Directory Services, etc. The county is moving from the existing virtualization platform to Nutanix to reduce significant increases in General Fund expenses caused by a significant increase in current vendor’s licensing fees. Functional capabilities are like-for-like and have been fully assessed. Migration will deliver no loss of functionality.

Justification & Alternatives:

To mitigate against significant cost increases tied to renewing the existing virtualization platform, the county is migrating to a new virtualization platform. Maintaining the existing virtualization platform would require an estimated $15 million in General Fund expenditure over the next five years. In contrast, migrating to Nutanix represents a total five-year investment of $8.3 million, utilizing $4.3 million in upfront Capital Improvement Plan funding and $4 million in ongoing General Fund licensing fees over the 5 years.

The vendor will install and configure the virtualization platform and provide implementation support for migration from the existing virtualization platform over to Nutanix, targeting completion by the end of October.
