Background and Discussion:

The Bayland Park Master Plan captures the community’s long-term vision to transform Bayland Park at the intersection of Sharpstown, Gulfton, Braeburn, and Meyerland neighborhoods in Precinct 4.  The Bayland Park Master Plan outlines a vision for the future of Bayland Park and provides recommendations for developing an inclusive environment with enhanced facilities, diverse programming, and improved connectivity. These changes aim to better serve the community's needs for active and passive recreation and open space. This master plan report results from a dedicated and sustained effort by stakeholders, community members, and advocacy leaders alongside Harris County Precinct 4.

Bayland Park has a rich history that traces back to the late 1800s. Originally, this site was home to the Bayland Orphans Home for Boys, a refuge for the orphaned children of deceased Confederate veterans. In 1936, the

orphanage was relocated to Webster, paving the way for the transformation of the site into Bayland Park in the 1950s. The park quickly became a vital part of the community, particularly known for its deep connection to baseball. It was the first park in the county to establish little league fields, which provided space for young athletes and their families to recreate in the growing Sharpstown area.

Expected Impact:

Bayland Park Master Plan’s vision is for a dynamic health and resilience hub that is an active park for all. The Master Plan details a connected park that will bring neighborhoods together to celebrate community and cultural diversity and provides a space dedicated to nurturing growth for every resident.

Community engagement for this effort began in fall 2023, continuing over the next 12 months until fall 2024. A total of 19,593 data points were collected that informed the development of the master plan and recommendations. Coordination with METRO is ongoing as Bayland Park is the end-of-line station for the Gulfton Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. METRO is conducting a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) strategy to support infill affordable housing along the transit corridor.
