Background and Discussion:

Public Health is requesting approval to create a program coordinator position for the Cultivating Opportunities in Modern Public Health & Applied Service Systems (COMPASS) Program. COMPASS is a new initiative that collaborates with local universities to provide nursing students with real public health immersion experiences as part of their required coursework, thereby enhancing student placement and strengthening the pipeline of public health careers after graduation. Through this role, Harris County Public Health is investing in local nurses’ training and knowledge of public health essentials, enhancing the care provided within the communities we serve.

Expected Impact:

This position will be funded through the CDC Strengthening U.S. Public Health Infrastructure, Workforce, & Data Systems, PHIG A1 Award.

By embedding hands-on training into academic and professional development, the program increases our agency's ability to build a pipeline of graduates and staff who can apply research to real-world public health issues, leading to measurable improvements and outcomes towards addressing current and future public health challenges with greater precision and efficiency.
