Request by Justice of the Peace 5-2 for approval of a Final Investment Memo for the JP 5-2 Unit 6 Mediation Room Renovation project for $61,000 and approval of commercial paper funding in the amount of $65,000.

Project Description:

The project is located at 16715 Clay Rd. Harris County Courthouse Annex 11. It converts Unit 6, an existing office unit, to a mediation room.

Project Scope:

The project is to uninstall existing large obsolete lektrievers, remodel Unit 6, and then add IT equipment and furniture to meet medication and case preparation needs.

The major elements are:

1.                     Removing obsolete huge lektrievers in Unit 4 and 7 to make space available for workstations.

2.                     Building a wall in Unit 6 to separate the kitchen and main space and installing an exit door for safety.

Justification:

The benefit of the project is to release the current overflow caseload from the single courtroom and to meet and stabilize the courthouse capacity.

Alternatives and Engagement:

Alternatives are to assign more space to the court by either relocating the tax office or the other county office in this building to another or relocating the court to a bigger building. These alternatives are much more costly and difficult.

Not funding or delaying the project would lead to greater case backlog, angry customers, and a loss of people’s trust in local government and County court.
