title

Request by the Sheriff’s Office for approval to accept an amendment to an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice to extend the grant end date to June 30, 2025 for the FY 2023 COPS Technology and Equipment Program.

end

Background and Discussion:

The COPS Office Technology and Equipment Program is designed to develop and acquire effective equipment, technologies, and interoperable communications that assist in responding to and preventing crime. The objective is to provide funding for projects which improve police effectiveness and the flow information among law enforcement agencies, local government service providers, and the communities they serve. Funding shall be used for the projects, and in the amounts specified. On October 10, 2023, Commissioners Court approved the request to accept a grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice for grant funds in the amount of $100,000.

Expected Impact:

This project seeks to utilize virtual reality equipment to better prepare personnel for responding to critical

calls for service involving de‐escalation and crisis intervention situations in alignment with the counties strategic goal of making Harris County safter and more just.

Alternative Options:

If our agency does not accept the grant award amendment, the Sheriff’s Office would forfeit the opportunity

receive the purchased virtual reality training equipment before the grant end date.
