Background and Discussion:

This request seeks approval to renew the Pet Food contract for Harris County Public Health - Veterinary Public Health (VPH). As an open intake shelter responsible for the care of approximately 600 animals each day, VPH requires consistent access to high-quality pet food. Prior to the current contract, issues with delivery, pricing, and quality prevented the distribution of proper nutrition for sheltered animals.

Expected Impact:

Renewing this contract will help the shelter further its efforts to improve animal health and welfare, while also providing predictable costs. Good nutrition is essential in shelters-supporting immune systems, lessening stress-related digestive problems, and speeding up recovery from injuries. As a result, medical expenses may decrease, animals could have shorter stays (making room for more strays), and their adjustment into family homes after adoption can become smoother.

Alternative Options:

Without a contract, VPH will need to identify multiple vendors to purchase quality pet food and costs will be inconsistent.
