Background and Discussion:

Channel K140-00-00 is a tributary of Cypress Creek in Harris County Precinct 3.  The channel was originally designed as an earthen trapezoidal section from Louetta Rd to Vintage Preserve Pkwy in the 1950’s and was deepened and widened in the 1980s. The channel bottom has been significantly damaged by erosion and needs to be stabilized to prevent further damage.  The project scope includes repairing side slope and flowline failures, storm sewer outfalls, backslope drainage systems, erosion armoring using Riprap and excess sediment removal. Repairs include the placement of select fill material, placement of well graded mix and the placement of grade #1 riprap. Channel cross sections will be reconstructed with a maximum 3:1 (H:V) slope throughout.

Expected Impact:

The intent of this contract is to return the channel to the original configuration and capacity to assure it performs as intended. This will benefit the surrounding neighborhood as stormwater is better able to flow downstream thereby reducing the potential for flooding in the neighborhood.

Alternative Options:

The alternative is not to do the project, but that would result in continued deterioration of the existing earthen channel leading to an increased potential for flooding of the area neighborhoods.

County Strategic Plan Goal:  2. Connect our community with safe, reliable, equitably distributed, and well-maintained infrastructure.
