Background and Discussion:

The Native Grass and Forb Seed Mix contract will provide a mix of native species of grasses and forbs that have been tested and proven to grow and thrive in Southeast Texas. The mix of species was developed through an agreement between Texas A&M University Kingsville and the District over a period of several years. Through this research, seed growers now have access to and can provide the quantity of seed necessary to supplement District turf establishment seed requirements. These services will provide support for infrastructure maintenance work that will be executed as a result of the passage of the ‘Maintenance Matters’ Proposition in November 2024.

Expected Impact:

The District needs commercial growers to begin producing these locally sourced varieties for seed. It is expected that by offering a contract, growers will be enticed to produce the seed in the quantity needed to supplement the District’s turf program. The District will use the native seed mix in areas where mowing frequency can be reduced, saving tax payer dollars and reaping more benefits of the native plants.

Alternative Options:

Alternatives include choosing to wait another year until more observations of the mix have occurred or pairing back the program.
