Background and Discussion:

On Friday, August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey struck 280 miles of the Texas Gulf Coast, retreated, and made another landfall near the Louisiana-Texas border, inundating Southeast Texas with catastrophic flooding and inflicting approximately $125 billion in damage over a four-day period. Northeast Houston and Unincorporated East Harris County were two of the hardest-hit and neglected communities following this Category 4 hurricane. Prior to the storm, residents turned to East Houston Regional Medical Center (EHRMC) for their medical care. As with many homes & businesses, EHRMC flooded & permanently closed. Northeast Houston and East Harris County have historically experienced limited local healthcare services, with a dire lack of primary care physicians and affordable medical care providers. The only accessible hospital left after the storm in the area is LBJ General Hospital, which has been inundated w/approx. 10,000 additional patients.

Project consists of procuring three medical pods with options for an additional pod, based on the local needs. These pods will be located on the Flukinger Community Center site and will provide health and medical services to the nearby community

Expected Impact:

The Pod Complex provides solutions for an immediate response to medical needs when disasters hit. The Channelview Wellness Pod Complex would provide Psychiatric/Mental Health; Women’s Health; Pharm/Lab; & Primary Care services to families living near the distressed community. The Channelview Wellness Pod Complex will provide evidence-based, best-practice care in areas where demand cannot be met by local clinicians. This project is part of an integrated approach to recovery.

Alternative Options:

Build a new freestanding building
