Background and Discussion:

Through the Healthy Start Initiative, Public Health Services will implement comprehensive and person-centered strategies for delivering quality care and support pregnant individuals to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates and improve perinatal health outcomes. The positions will provide critical resources to expand Harris County Public Health’s maternal and child health services and programming, with targeted outreach to birthing persons and infants in 14 zip codes with the county’s highest infant mortality rates (IMR).

Expected Impact:

This grant would support Harris County Public Health’s (HCPH’s) health promotion strategic direction, specifically Objective 3.2.4 to develop a multi-stakeholder approach to reduce maternal and infant mortality and promote healthy starts for babies. Our goal with the funding is to complement the programming available in HCPH by reducing infant mortality rates (IMR) in Harris County and decreasing disparities in infant mortality (IM) across racial/ethnic groups by achieving steeper declines for groups with the highest IMR. This funding would allow HCPH to increase case management, care coordination, and group-based and parenting education to facilitate access to medical care and community-based resources; and increase uptake of healthy behaviors before, during, and after pregnancy.
