Request by the Sheriff’s Office for approval to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Justice/Office of Justice Programs for grant funds in the amount of $1,984,895, with no required match, for the FY25 Community Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI) project.

Background and Discussion:

The Sheriff’s Office is requesting a grant of $1,984,895 for the period of 10/1/2025 - 9/30/2029 to replicate and expand upon the success of the recent Cypress Station initiative that significantly reduced violent crime in that location.  There is no match required.

The proposed project addresses critical drivers of violence by combining enforcement, prevention, and intervention strategies through sustained, cross-sector collaboration with residents, community organizations, and other county service providers.  The Sheriff’s Office is partnering on this grant with the University of Virginia, which will provide research and evaluation support, and the National Sheriffs’ Association, which will disseminate the project’s results nationally.

Expected Impact:

It is expected that this project will result in a data-driven reduction of violent crime in Harris County, and the lessons learned will be communicated to a national audience of law enforcement professionals.

Alternative Options:

Not applying for the grant would mean forfeiting the opportunity to receive the grant funds.
