Background and Discussion:

This notice of funding opportunity supports the implementation of intervention and suppression strategies to reduce youth gang crime and violence and promote public safety. These strategies will help to prevent

youth from joining gangs, discontinue involvement in gangs, and prevent and reduce additional youth gang violence. Category 1 will support intervention strategies that can prevent youth from joining gangs and help them discontinue their involvement in gangs. Proposed strategies should assist youth who are experiencing multiple risk factors for gang involvement.

The Texas Anti-Gang (TAG) grant program for local governments administered by the Office of Public Safety through the Office of the Texas Governor, supports regional, multidisciplinary approaches to combat gang violence through the coordination of gang prevention, intervention, and suppression activities across the state. On behalf of the Texas Anti-Gang (TAG) Center, this 36-month project aims to reduce youth gang involvement in unincorporated Harris County and surrounding low-resource counties. There is no required cash match and includes the required 5% indirect cost rate.

Expected Impact:

Funding will support direct mentoring services, the development of a regional youth vulnerability assessment, and the engagement of expert consultants to ensure all nonprofit programming aligns with the OJJDP Comprehensive Gang Model. Expected outcomes include reduced recidivism among referred youth, increased school engagement, and the creation of a scalable intervention toolkit for other regional TAG centers.

Alternative Options:

Not accepting this award would forfeit the funding opportunity for the TAG Center.
