Background and Discussion:
Harris County Public Health’s Mosquito and Vector Control Division (hereinafter, “MVCD”) conducts pesticide resistance testing on mosquito populations that are among the primary vectors responsible for the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases within Harris County communities. This Property Usage Agreement with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (hereinafter, “HLSR”) provides MVCD with access to a secure, nearby location to conduct this testing. The agreement will support MVCD’s ongoing mosquito surveillance and vector control efforts and assist the County in monitoring pesticide resistance among mosquito populations of public health significance.
Expected Impact:
The results of pesticide resistance testing are critical to MVCD’s ability to identify effective mosquito control products for use in protecting the community from mosquito-borne pathogens, including West Nile virus, Saint Louis encephalitis virus, and Eastern equine encephalitis virus. Continued access to a secure, nearby testing location will facilitate consistent sampling, improve the efficiency and reliability of resistance testing, and allow MVCD to conduct testing more frequently. This information will support data-driven mosquito control strategies and enhance the County’s ability to respond to mosquito-borne disease threats.
Alternative Options:
MVCD has access to alternative locations for pesticide resistance testing; however, these sites present operational limitations that may affect the consistency, security, and effectiveness of testing activities. Some locations are dependent on specific wind conditions, while others have limited space or lack adequate security to conduct testing safely and consistently. Unsecured locations may also introduce additional variables when members of the public enter or pass through the testing area during testing activities. The HLSR site provides MVCD with a secure, appropriately sized location with favorable testing conditions and convenient proximity to the laboratory facilities necessary to complete the testing process. Continued access to this site will support consistent, secure, and efficient pesticide resistance testing operations.
