Background and Discussion:

Neighboring communities adjacent to the proposed Renwick Linear Park and Trail, including residents along Beechnut, Chimney Rock, and North Braeswood, have limited access to public parks, pools, or libraries. The largest demographic near the proposed trail consists of renters living in nearby apartment complexes, totaling nearly 2,200 households. These households have a median income of under $46,182 and face an annual eviction rate of 37%, highlighting the vulnerability of this population.

Expected Impact:

This trail aims to improve equitable multimodal access for these communities, promote community investment and economic development, and expand safe pedestrian access to schools, churches, community centers, and businesses. The existing greenspace is also improperly graded, which has resulted in street flooding west of the proposed trail. This study will explore opportunities to improve drainage and mitigate these issues, including integrating prairie restoration, swales, and regrading the undeveloped greenspace to promote drainage.

Alternative Options:

The alternative option for this proposal would be to determine other funding or to complete these items in-house.

County Strategic Plan Goal:  2. Connect our community with safe, reliable, equitably distributed, and well-maintained infrastructure.
