Background and Discussion:

Project included the reconstruction of Schiel Road 2 - from West of Fairfield Place Drive to West of Mason Road. Reconstruction includes an upgrade of the roadway from a two-lane asphalt road with open ditches to a 4-lane concrete curb and gutter boulevard with a 32' raised median.

Change includes additional cost for the installation of school flashers, sidewalks, ramps, and reinforced concrete pipe quantities.  Due to an error in stationing on the plans, the quantities were underestimated compared to the actual quantities required for a complete storm sewer system as called out on plans and school flashers were added as new item to the contract. This change in contract also included adding additional time delays due to unforeseen field conditions. This change order is necessary to properly compensate contractor for the additional work and time required.

New Item

SCHOOL ZONE FLASHERS                                                                                                         $172,003.08

ADA RAMP - TYPE 9                                                                                                                              $3593.20

Existing Item

REINFORCED CONCRETE PIPE (30”) RUBBER GASKET                     $47,745.60

Expected Impact:

Change allows the contractor to be appropriately compensated for the work performed while mitigating the additional cost as much as possible.

Alternative Options:

The alternative was to add the flashers in the original contract.
