Background and Discussion:
The primary risk to Detention Officers is the risk of harm due to not having any protection against edged weapons. Incidents involving the discovery of the possession/manufacture of weapons are prevalent and on the rise. Stab resistant vests will provide much needed protection against edged weapons, reducing the risk of serious injury and possible death. Funding for this project was included as a Congressionally Directed Spending request in the FY 2024 federal budget.
Expected Impact:
The purchase of stab resistant vests will enhance Detention Officer safety amongst a high population of inmates where the environment has a propensity for aggression and violence against staff. The vests will reduce the serious risk of injury for Detention Officers within the Sheriff’s Office.
Alternative Options:
If the Sheriff’s Office does not apply for this grant, we forfeit the opportunity to receive congressionally directed spending that would support the purchase of Stab Resistant Vests for Detention Officers.
