Background and Discussion:

Harris Health’s outpatient gastroenterology (GI) lab at Quentin Mease creates additional capacity for colonoscopy procedures. By increasing service capacity, it is the goal of Harris Health to reduce the number of colorectal cancer diagnoses through prevention, and to reduce the severity of colorectal cancer diagnoses provided to patients (i.e. Stage I verses Stage IV). This new location will improve appointment availability at a central location in Harris County. It is also directly on a bus route, making access easier and minimizing transportation burdens for those patients without personal transportation. Further efforts at minimizing cultural barriers related to cancer screening include efforts by Harris Health’s primary care physicians and other clinical staff to proactively identify at risk patients and provide compelling dialogue that encourages screening according to established guidelines.

Expected Impact:

This amendment will adjust budget categories and will extend the term and period of performance of the GI Lab program.

Alternative Options:

Not extending the agreement.
