Background and Discussion:

Community Health Leaders attended all four workshops, submitted project plans, attended the ceremony and check-ins, and provided implementation reports. Each person will receive $1,500 total, with $1,000 of the total dedicated to project implementation, from the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) grant. The Community Health Leaders ambassador program launched as a component of the three-year Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Community Health Workers (CHW) grant (August 31, 2020 - August 30, 2024) that was previously approved by Commissioners Court. Ambassador candidates are recruited through various forms of outreach in target populations. Interested candidates apply, are screened by HCPH staff based on if they meet program requirements, and if so, candidates attend a virtual interview. After all interviews are conducted, HCPH staff evaluate all candidates and prioritize filling cohort spot with individuals that can best achieve program deliverables/requirements and fit ideal qualities for program. The goal of the program is to increase health champion capacity of community leaders throughout Harris County so they may take public health principles into their networks and communities and advance community health.

Expected Impact:

Ambassadors learned key public health principles such as social determinants of health, health equity, health disparities, and how to implement community projects. A large component of the ambassador program is project implementation, and there will be 54 unique projects ambassadors will be implementing to improve community health throughout Harris County through this workshop series and project.
