Background and Discussion:

The funds provided by this grant will be used to replace the older Michael Talbott Service Center diesel engine equipment with new all electric equipment and expand the Michael Talbott Service Center’s existing onsite refueling infrastructure by adding solar panels. This grant is under the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Texas Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Program (TxVEMP). The Flood Control District would be fully reimbursed after all costs have been paid, grant-funded new equipment received, and older diesel engine equipment rendered permanently inoperable.

Expected Impact:

The project benefits include reduced pollution from the Michael Talbott Service Center’s diesel engine equipment as well as using solar panels to provide electricity for the Michael Talbott Service Center.

Pollution from Michael Talbott Service Center diesel engine equipment will be reduced by approximately 0.1 tons/year of greenhouse gases. Pollution will also be reduced by 2,390 tons/year of greenhouse gas by replacing fossil fuel generated electricity with solar panel generated electricity.

Alternative Options:

The Michael Talbott Service Center diesel engine equipment could be replaced, and solar panels could be installed over time as funds become available through the annual budget request process.
