Request by the Sheriff’s Office for approval to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Justice for grant funds in the amount of $1,031,000, with no required match, for the FY26 Community Project Funding for COPS Technology and Equipment Program Grant.

Background and Discussion:

This is an invitational grant opportunity authorized by a congressional earmark sponsored by Representative Lizzie Fletcher.  The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is the component of the U.S. Department of Justice responsible for advancing the practice of community policing. This notice of funding opportunity provides funding to develop and acquire effective law enforcement equipment, technologies, and interoperable communications that assist in responding to and preventing crime and the implementation of community policing. The Sheriff’s Office is applying for a grant in the amount of $1,031,000 to purchase two semi-trucks, a generator, and upgraded building technology for the Mobile Command Unit.

Expected Impact:

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office proposed project will enhance the Mobile Command Unit by acquiring two semi-trucks, a generator, and upgraded building technology to improve public-safety response and community engagement across the jurisdiction. This equipment will enable the Mobile Command Unit to be deployed more quickly to emergency scenes, community events, and areas with elevated public safety concerns.

Alternative Options:

Not applying for this grant would forfeit the opportunity to receive needed funds.
