Request for approval to amend the bylaws for the Harris County Safe School Commission.

Background and Discussion:
The Safe School Commission was established by Commissioners Court as an ad-hoc advisory group in June 2022. The commission was charged with developing recommendations on how the Court could support all 25 Independent School Districts’ and Private Schools’ safety strategies in time for the 2022-2023 school year. The Court reappointed members during the 2023-2024 school year and later extended the appointment terms of commission members beyond the 2023-2024 school year and through December 31, 2024. In August 2024, the Court approved bylaws and established the commission as a standing advisory commission to continue to review, work, and develop recommendations related to school safety strategies year-round. Members serve two-year terms.
Expected Impact:
Amendment of the bylaws will re-establish the commission as a standing commission of Harris County to allow the commission to continue to review, work, and develop recommendations year-round related to school safety strategies, in consultation and coordination with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, Harris County Department of Education, and the Region 4 Education Service Center. The bylaws will include the Harris County Sheriff’s office.
