Request by the Sheriff’s Office for approval to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Justice for grant funds in the amount of $1,485,000, with no required match, for the FY 2024 Bulletproof Windshields Program.

Background and Discussion:

The grant would fund the installation of bulletproof windshields for patrol cars within the Sheriff’s Office. As criminal activities involving firearms rise, it is imperative to provide our deputies with enhanced protective equipment by equipping patrol vehicles with bulletproof windshields to ensure their safety and operational effectiveness. Funding for this project was included as a Congressionally Directed Spending request in the FY 2024 federal budget.

Expected Impact:

Law enforcement officers routinely face potentially life-threatening situations. Our agency’s patrol cars have standard glass which does not withstand high-velocity projectiles. With the increasing threats and dangers that officers face in the line of duty, bulletproof windshields will provide critical protection against firearms, reducing the risk of injury or death.

Alternative Options:

If the Sheriff’s Office does not apply for this grant, we forfeit the opportunity to receive congressionally directed spending that would support the purchase of bulletproof windshields for patrol cars.
