Background and Discussion:

The Texas Legislative Internship Program (TLIP) has provided more than 900 students valuable experiences in the Texas Legislature, the offices of the Texas Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and the Chief Justice of Supreme Court the Supreme Court, city and county offices, and even Texas Monthly magazine. TLIP cultivates the next generation of public service leaders thanks to ongoing partnerships and support from the Mickey Leland Center at Texas Southern University, the Texas Legislature, the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, the Beaumont Foundation, and the generous sponsors of this important biennial event. Many of the program’s former participants continue to work in public service at the federal, state, and local levels of government, including three current members of the Texas House of Representatives, a District Attorney, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge, seven/current former Harris County Judges and City Council Members.

As TLIP marks 35 years of building pathways to power for students across Texas, it stands as a testament to the power of opportunity. With each new cohort, the program continues to cultivate the next generation of leaders who aren’t just prepared for the future, but ready to shape it.

Expected Impact:  TLIP is recognized for cultivating public service leaders.
