Background and Discussion:

The proposed Sweetwater Lane Reconstruction project focuses on critical improvements to Sweetwater Lane including construction of new sidewalks, streetlights, stormwater drainage, traffic signals, a wider bridge over Halls Bayou, and other access management improvements to improve safety and connectivity.

These comprehensive improvements aim to enhance safety, improve bicycle and pedestrian facilities, improve flood resilience, and reduce travel delays along the Sweetwater Lane corridor. This project promises significant and measurable benefits for all users of this vital corridor and aligns seamlessly with the vibrant growth in the area.

The grant application will seek $24 million of the Department of Transportation’s federal funds through the H-GAC with $6 million of local matching funds from Precinct 2 for a total project cost of $30 million. The proposed improvements will reduce traffic congestion and improve safety and air quality.

Expected Impact:

The submission of this project application under the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s 2023 Project Selection Process will allow Harris County to seek federal funds to reduce traffic congestion, increase transportation safety, improve pedestrian accommodations, reduce vehicular emissions, and decrease the travel delays for the Sweetwater Lane corridor.

Alternative Options:

To not to apply for the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s 2023 Project Selection Process and pursue the proposed project with local funding.
