Background and Discussion:
In November 2021, Commissioners Court adopted Harris County Equity Guidelines to align with the vision, “Harris County will build a more dynamic, vibrant, and resilient community while being inclusive, equitable, and transparent in all that we do.”
In March 2024, the Office of County Administration hired the Chief Equity Officer and in April 2024, Commissioners Court adopted a five-year strategic framework with an updated vision to create a Harris County that is safe and fair, healthy, secure, resilient, thriving, and connected. The expanded definition of equity aligns the strategic plan with equity priorities.
Expected Impact: Approval of the Harris County Equity Guidelines will result in a common understanding of equity, alignment with the strategic plan, creation of a shared county vision for equity, and help us achieve more equitable outcomes across the County.
Alternative Options: Keeping the current guidelines will continue the inconsistent understanding of equity across departments.
